TOPIC: Shot/Disc Split Training

Shot/Disc Split Training 8 Months ago Karma: 0
I am interested in implementing the 13 week throws program at my school but I have one huge question. For my kids that do compete in the disc and shot, do I need to double the volume for each practice or split the volume between the two events. For example, if we are aiming for 45 throws on a Monday, then do we take 45 on the shot and 45 on the disc? OR Do we take 22-23 throws on the disc and 22-23 throws on the shot? Thanks for weighing in!

I've always split the number between shot and disc, or I'll go solely or heavily shot one day and do the same with disc another day. I am pretty certain the total number of throws is total, not doubled for the two disciplines. Heck, with only two rings, my kids have a pretty hard time getting even 35 throws in, much less 70! As it is, I have to have some of them pair up and stand throw back and forth to each other just to get the throws in.

I would first suggest that that needs to very depending on the thrower. While it is a good general program to fallow not everyone can do it with sucess. Also I have my kids throw shot one day, only focusing on shot, and then discus the next, only focusing on discus. You are more likely to get 45 throws in the shot than the discus but I would not suggest that volume for all throwers. As a coach you will be able to tell when a thrower is spent. I would say that 45 throws in a day is more of an off season amount to me. When I was competing I would throw 2 stands, 2 half turns, 2 south africans, and about 10-16 full throws = 16-22 throws a practice. With the off season being about 25-30 throws a practice. When your kids are just getting to tired to maintain their technique it is time to cut them off or they will just get frustrated. That has been my experience. Good Luck.
