Collegian Throwing? 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I am currently a high school senior and have commited myself academically to Duquesne University in the fall of 2009. I have competed all 4 years of high school on the varsity level and the question I have is reparding the possibility of me throwing at Duquesne University next year. I am aware that Duquesne competes on the Division 1 level, but my main question is regarding how do I become reqruited and go about trying to throw for Duquesne next year? Should I consult my high school coach and see what he says and if he can offer me any help? I am greatly interested in throwing at the collegian level.

Congrats on going to Duquense! They have a great throwing tradition there and it all starts with there coach Jayne Beatty. She is one the best throwing coaches in the area. In Div 1, I know they start practicing in the fall, so I would say do every thing you can possibly do to get ready for the fall. I would start by getting a hold of coach Beatty and let her know you're interested in throwing, and ask her what you should do over the summer time to be ready. Also, get used to throwing the heavier implements. There are a couple of meets at slippery rock uni. to help you get ready for throwing the 16lber. Check it out www.sru.edu. THE WORST THING YOU COULD DO IS NOT DO ANYTHING AT ALL. Good Luck! and I hope to compete a with you sometime!

It is a good idea to remember that most collegiate programs start practicing the first day of school in the fall - regardless of what level they are at. Even if it is not 'official' practice there will be activities such as classes, etc. that are expected for track athletes to attend to kick off their training for the year. Make sure you are ready to go and in great physical condition for this at this time. Also, be sure to reach out to the coach for an introduction now... don't wait until this summer or the school year.

Another thing you can do that will be extremely helpful will be to begin getting used to the heavier implements so you aren't shocked and not prepared when it comes time to start throwing them. For the men the difference is a very big one but you can quickly adjust. I might suggest throwing 'puds' over the summer that are similar weights to the collegiate implements.

Best of luck!

I agree with everyone else here. You need to contact the coach. Most schools will let you walk on at least, and it doesn't have to be the first day of practice. I have even heard of schools having open tryouts to help broaden their teams. But either way make sure you keep weight training and yes practice with the heavier implaments it will make the transition much eaiser.
