TOPIC: throwing relative to size?

throwing relative to size? 4 Years, 7 Months ago Karma: 0
As a sprinter, bounder and javelin guy the shot put has always been my favorite. Just pure power! This summer I have decide to put the shot. At 5'6 and 157lbs what would be a good throw for me. Thanks, dave S from PA

Well, how old are you and how well do you carry your weight? I could probably tell you how far you should or could be throwing.

I am 39 years of age and I am very fit. Can still cover 40 yards in under 4.6 seconds.

To me, its sounds like 35-40 ft is a good throw and with practice you could definitly hit and maybe even further.

it all depends on how well you do in your technique wether it be glide or spin and if you are doing it right. remember this " Speed of the feet dictates flight of the shot"

Dave,

The shot put event is not pure power like you have said. It combines Speed, Agility, Flexibility and yes, Power. I was a shorter thrower, 5'9" and I went to a few inches under 70 feet. I have a few athletes that I train who are shorter and they are around 50 feet after a year or 2 of training say. Good luck and don't let people tell you that you need to be a giant to put the shot well.

Take Care,

Your stats are fine for a sophomore thrower and you appear to have good size and strength to develop into further throwing potential. At this point you need to work on developing quickness, explosiveness and all-around athleticism vs. working on becoming a lot stronger. You already have the size and strength to throw the high school shot a lot further. Make sure to work on your technique, throw a lot of puds/med balls and watch a lot of video of top throwers in the off season. If you do this and become an overall better athlete by next season you will be way ahead of your competition and peers. It is very difficult to make big gains in throwing performance in a typical high school season, you have to incorporate aspects of your training throughout the year and most of all you have to REALLY WANT TO BE GOOD and work for it!

While it is always good to get stronger in my opinion size does not tend to matter it is all about speed and foot work. I have seen many small fast guys that were able to beat out bigger stronger guys. In the rotation distances tend to be farther but there are some gliders who would say other wise. Keep training agility, speed, and power.
