TOPIC: Using the legs
#320
Using the legs 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I just got done my freshmen season improving 8 feet since the fall, but I'm still not where i should be in regards to my size, I'm only throwing 48'. I know I'm not utilizing my legs like I should be, and thats my main focus during this summer break. Does anyone have any tips or drills that will focus on getting me to use my legs more when I throw?

Play some Golf or Go to the Batting cages. And Really try to swing, that is one thing that I did. It is physiologicaly the same motion even though it is not the same throwing stance.

Squats, deads, and cleans will force you to use your legs and bend them while you build your leg muscles. Then when you go out to practice do squat jumps in the circle. Use a med ball and squat and push up as hard as you can to throw the med ball. You can do that forwards and backwards.

My favorite is the no arm throws. Wrap your bent arm, as if you were holding the shot, in an ace wrap and a little tape to hold it in place. Complete progressional and full throws. Since you can't extend your arms, you are forced to use your legs. Just keep in mind the circulation gets cut off after a bit so you may need to re-wrap a couple times.

Otherwise, do throws for height. For example over a field goal post or pole vault standard (with a bungee, not a cross bar). You can use the visual cue of trying to get lower as you cross the circle. This helps to keep you low.

Good Luck
