TOPIC: Throwing out of the sector to the right

I have a right-handed thrower that consistently throws out of the sector to the right. His legal throws are just inside the sector line at around 53 -55 ft. Can anyone recommend a cure for what ails him?

It is late in the season so i wouldn't make dramatic changes. First thing is take a look at his position in the front. Is he in the middle of the circle or on the right side? Is he leaving his left foot closed which would force him to push the shot out the right side? Are his left shoulder, left hip, and right hip and foot getting open?

A couple things to try;

I always start by talking about getting all of the throwers forces moving in one direction. Talk about summation of forces vs. having a mis-direction of forces. The path of least resistance is at a tangent (towards that right sector line), however, it is not very powerful.

Try using the mental cue of trying to throw at the left sector line. Over exagerating can be helpful)

line up a little to the left in the back. That way his throws with the same technique will fall further into the sector.

Sometimes just tell the thrower to keep everything turning in the front so that they don't stop movement in the front.

My experience is that he is not putting his hip into it. In viewing video of him, I noticed his left foot is closed and his left shoulder and left hip are pointing into the middle-left of the sector. We started working on a more active right knee and open left foot last week. Thanks for the information. I needed some affirmation.

As a coach and I see this I start to look at the althetes head and shoulders. With young throwers there is a tendency to lead the throw with the head and the shoulders. Give him a cue to keep his head with his throwing arm and to watch the implement leave his hand before he moves his head away. This could help fix his problem too.
