Help needed 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
I am a junior in HS and our throwing team has no coach at all. I started to throw all three events, and really need some drills/tips. I am currently throwing 36 ft. I just use the power position, but would like to learn the spin. I know its late to try and learn this even, but i am the 2nd best thrower behind a 50 ft. thrower. He cannot teach well, and anything would be of use.

your ambition is admirable. number one thing you should know is that help is available if you seek it out. most coaches and advanced throwers are more than willing to help out in any way they can, but most are not forthcoming with their knowledge. nobody wants to come across as a know-it-all, haha. so, i think the best way to reach your goals is to make the initiative at all the meets you go to. introduce yourself to other coaches and athletes, develop relationships and start networking. i think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how open others are to sharing their knowledge. in our neck of the woods we occasionally come across someone in your shoes, and it's not uncommon to see myself and other area coaches all working together after the athletes are done throwing at our meets - they are almost like mini-camps where we bounce off ideas and collaborate. also, read as much literature and watch as many videos as you can! good luck, buddy.

Some good drills for a rotation would be 90,180,270,360 drills. This is a pivating drill disgned to simulate all the turns one will take in a rotational throw. Start by putting all your weight on your none throwing side, in a side lunge style, but not stretching out past your foot. While up on your toes pivote to 90 degrees. When you get a hang of that with out using your arms to get around go to 180 degrees, and so on. This is a good starting drill and can be a very good balance drill as well.

i would think that since you have no coach than you should learn the glide. it is easier to learn. or if you reach out you could get private lessons if you have the money.
