Which Javelin thrower/videos would you consider to be the best options for a new thrower or coach to study to learn technique?

The more video you study from a variety of sources the better off you will be. I think it is always a mistake to pattern your throwing style completely after another person's. Often times what you see may not be what that athlete is trying to feel on any particular throw. Not to mention the differing physiological strength and weaknesses that govern an athlete throwing style at any that point in time.
In short watch a lot of video of others and watch more of yourself to make sure it's what you want to be doing.

I agree with you oduncan. I've only been throwing for a little over two months now, but a lot of throwing technique is subject to each thrower's personal comforts and throwing style.
Personally, I like to watch Andreas Thorkildsen. I've learned a lot from watching him, I think. I guess that's just because trying to throw more like him feels kind of comfortable to me.
Watching a lot of different people is probably the best way to go.

Thanks for posting the Tom Petranoff videos in the video gallery. This looks like a great video to watch in for technique since it's from multiple angles and in slow motion.

How applicable is that video of Tom Petranoff to today's javelin throwers though? I know nothing about the jav so I could be wrong but isn't the technique of today with the new implement different than how Petranoff would have thrown with the old jav?

like i said study the technique don't try to copy it , it is best to develop what works for you , i'm a big guy , 6ft 3inches 270lbs so a runup like Tom has is really not what my knees want , Tom's workouts are another aspect to look into but also modify it you are talking about a guy who threw the jav or 327 feet andmany times over 300 feet , also here is a man who never suffered any major injury because of his throwing style, that is testament to his training and dedication and passion to throwing, he still gives freely of his training ideas i know i have been using them but i have modified them to suit my time frame alotted and training , i'm a master thrower i work a full time blue collar job as a maintenance mechanic , i train when i can , not as i want to i may add , why do i stil throw at age 56 because i love the sport and pride myself in being able to still be somewhat competitivewith a minimal amount of training , i also throw hammer , discus , shot and weight throw so i have to split my training for each event

I'm a high school thrower in Toronto and there aren't any javelin throws coaches here so I'm learning everything by myself. Basically I've seen almost every javelin throw video by top throwers since I started 2 years ago. I would agree with most of the others by saying to make your own style. Sometimes you may find similarities in certain aspects between you and top throwers but you should combine it with your style rather than forcing yourself to copy them. For example, I'm 16 and only 5'5" and about 140lbs so I find throwers like Pitkamaki and Thorkildsen very difficult to relate to in throwing style. Not trying to boast at all, but I relate more to Zelezny in throwing style (though the distance he and I throw seems to disagree). However, there are aspects of my throwing style that are completely different from him. What I'm trying to say is, find someone who shares most of your style and see what you can improve on.

Hello oduncan.
This is Duncan Atwood.
Of course I'm curious about your user name. Any info?
By the way, watch Thorkildsen for technique. He's smoothest, most accurate, and has the least odd characteristics.
