TOPIC: Weight to Hammer Transfer
#243
Weight to Hammer Transfer 2 Years, 10 Months ago Karma: 0
I am a D3 college thrower and I just finished my indoor season with Nationals this past weekend. We started throwing outoors right away ad this was the first time I picked up a hammer since the fall. I worked all indoor season on developing pretty good speed with the weight but now that I am outdoors I am so slow. Is this a normal thing, if so how long does it take for my body to adjust to the much lighter implement. As the week goes on I am getting a bit better but I didn't think the transfer woudl be this off. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry. I think it is perfectly normal. It took me a couple of weeks to fully adjust to the difference in weight and, more so, radius. Keep at it and get your reps in - you'll find your work in the weight pay off soon enough.

Re:Weight to Hammer Transfer - distances? 2 Years, 10 Months ago Karma: 7
Srokus,

I experienced the same issues when transferring from indoor to outdoor season. We worked on overcoming this by throwing lighter weight hammers outdoors to increase speed. Don't just throw the 16lb. hammer, make sure to mix it up while you are training outdoors with a combination of both light and heavy hammers. I always heard that you should be able to throw the same distance in meters with the hammer as you do in feet with the weight although I was never able to do this and my weight throw (relatively speaking) was much farther than the hammer. I'm curious what anyone else may have experienced related to this????
