Greetings All,
I have coached HS for the past 8 years and I have seen a lot of ebb and flow in the throwing performances in the Denver area. 60' has been elusive to so many, save Mr. Finley (stud), that winning State might only require 55' in shot and 175' in discus. Now, this is my first coaching experience, but I miss the big throws from back home in CA. What I am wondering is if any of you frequent or have gone at all to throwing clinics/camps? In CO we have a great weekend camp with Coach Bedard from CSU. But summer is a long break if you do go to the local USATF meets in your area. I feel that a 5-week, 6-hour per week throwing camp for 8th graders and above would create a lot of local interest. The kids would go twice a week for a three-hour lesson and throw in the local Saturday meets.
If you out there want to put some ideas together and possible generate some interest for a national name please let me know. I just don't want another State meet with only ONE representative from our league. Many of us coaches want to see increased competition and if disregard their home schools we can build something like so many of these clubs around the country get to do; coach more. Throw1deep, Seatown Express, and Steel Throwers are developing outstanding throwers in the off-season. I truly believe that my area near Denver could benefit from a short summer throwing camp.
Any thoughts?
