Tapering during peak of season - conference/state 3 Years, 10 Months ago Karma: 0
I feel comfortable with my program leading up to the PEAK weeks of the year but I cannot find anything specific about tapering for those final couple of weeks. I'm not quite sure how much lifting to do (if any) and how much throwing to do during the weeks of conference/sectionals/state.

Is it best to keep lifting but go light (i.e. 3 sets of 3-5 at 70% 1RM), keep lifting with low reps and heavy weight (1 set of 1-3 reps at 100% 1RM), or is it better to not touch weights and focus on drywork and throwing? How much do people back off throwing?

For me and the students that I coach I have found that during the start of the season higher reps with heavy weights is good. (i.e. 4x6 @75% or so) Then every 4 weeks drop the rep count and increase the weight (4x4 @80%, 4x2 @90%, and lastly 4x1 @95-100%). If done properly the last 4 weeks of 1 rep should see faster movement and more power in the circle. I like to plan it so that the week of regionals or states to be sets of 3x6 of low intensity lifting just to keep the nervous system active.

Good Luck, hope this was helpfull.
