TOPIC: getting out of the back better

getting out of the back better 2 Years, 9 Months ago Karma: 0
Commom problem here, but need some specific drills. I teach my athletes to pivot with the left foot while keeping their right foot on the ground until their chest is at about 10:00. Then we are working on sweeping the right foot wide and at the same time opeing up that inner thigh so that we can lead with an inner thigh into the middle of the ring. My problem is athletes leading into the middle with thier upper body and not their inner thigh. Also, what to do to get quicker from that wide sweep to snapping in to the center.

I think you should tell them to kick through and snap the head around and face the back of the ring on your right foot also toward the back. Tell them to look at the horizon or a landmark out in the sector not the ground. I tell my guys to act like your grabbing a pole in the middle of the ring with the left hand and that helps with dipping the left shoulder. Backwards 7's drill, broom stick drill as well. Put a broom stick across their back and that usually helps. Tell the kids that when they get to their right foot they need to be in that same plane that the disc started in to make a good throw. I make the kids do it over and over again. It gets old. I hope that helps you out.

I have never really liked the wide sweeping leg on a rotation, if you want a faster way have your kids rotate to 11:00 and kick through with their instep to almost tripping themselves. Their right foot should come right past their left. Also you want them to get a good hip lean. The best way to teach this is to have them pivot to 11:00 and then hold their right arm. Have them, while you hold them, to fall to the middle of the circle with their hip while keeping their shoulders level. Then without telling them after they get the hang of this let them go. Gravity will pull them down but they should have a reflex of their right foot catching them in the middle of the circle.
